Broddie's Gazette No. 13

June 2010

My strange dream - by Brod Smith, aged 13

I had this strange dream a while back. It was totally harmless but odd and it went something like this………..

My eldest son Perry and I were at a function in Melbourne where Vladimir Putin was attending with some security guys etc. on a business Casino venture junket. I didn’t ask too much. The less you know about the Casino’s inner workings the more safe your family is.

Anyway, we met and started talking primarily about Ultimate Fighting and the merits of Mui Thai which is what Perry my son occasionally does. Vlad, being a judo guy got close with us and asked if we could slip away and go somewhere tough. I’d grown up in St. Albans so suggested we went there. We snuck out the back of the toilets and jumped in my Fairlane and off we went to St. Albans. It was the middle of the night and when we got there Vlad decided to pick a fight with some blokes he thought were Yanks cos of their clothes and accents but they were actually Ukrainian/ Aussie young guys obsessed with Snoop Doggie. Anyway it was on and Vlad and my son had a great time throwing folks around while I kept the engine running in the car.

Eventually Vlad got bored so we jumped in the car and headed back to his hotel where we dropped him off around the corner and he snuck back in explaining he’d gone looking for a pie floater but had the wrong city. The bling he’d stolen from the young dudes in St Albans must have looked conspicuous though cos he was wearing chains from 6 different guys around his neck.

Some months later during the Russian summer Perry and I got an invitation to go horse riding and camping with Vlad in the Russian forests. He was a terrific host and we had a wonderful time in the woods and the tundra staying at a superb dacha and enjoying the best of what Russia could offer, plus hunting wolves at night on horseback with Kalashnikovs filled with tracer rounds.

At this point I woke up and realised that I’d been dreaming.

A few months later I found this pic on the web, which freaked me out as it said underneath “Vladimir Putin horse riding with unknown official”.

Wow!

Til next time.

Brod

P.S.

Matt and I will be riding into town soon for a couple of gigs at the Retreat. Our saddle bags will be full of songs from the new Unknown Country album as well as songs going back to my days with The Dingoes. Hope to see some of you there.
